Although recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is currently commercial on a large scale in China and Korea, the shift towards lower-cobalt cathode formulations will make recycling elsewhere by technologies now available at best a low-margin proposition. Research at the Department of Energy's new ReCell Center for Advanced Battery Recycling is directed towards lowering the cost of recycling by recovery of more and higher-valued products than just the elemental compounds currently recovered. This presentation will describe processes under development and potential economic advantages they could create.
