With the incumbent EV battery thermal management technology, either water/glycol solution or air cooling, heat transfer is insufficient to remove heat generated in fast charging process. Direct contact between hydrocarbon and battery enables fast charging with better cell temperature control and less energy loss during pumping compared to water/glycol solution, shown by our simulation studies. Our battery safety tests reveal that immersing battery cells in hydrocarbon fluid may provide better protection against thermal runaway propagation compared to today's typical thermal management equipment configurations. In this presentation, we will demonstrate hydrocarbon direct contact thermal management offers the potential for further, longer and safer operation of EVs.
