The requirements for power battery on HEVs involve structural layout, operational environments, energy management, and safety design. Battery thermal management (BTM) plays an important role in optimizing the battery performance, improving the battery longevity, enhancing the system safety, and preventing from thermal run-away. This presentation will review the technology progress of BTM from design analysis to application based on the published study on the battery of HEVs from Toyota Prius and others. Finally both internal and external BTM are discussed to optimize the temperature controls to meet dynamic power requirements on batteries for EV/HEV.
